Renting Heavy Equipment

Heavy Equipment Names in Six Languages: Site Glossary

One machine often has a different name in each language on site. Find the right word in the tables, then add its size or capacity so the request cannot be misread.

Key takeaways

  • Show the row to a driver or supplier: every name is in its own script.
  • Everyday Arabic words such as ونش and شيول can mean more than one machine. Confirm by specification, not by the word.
  • Many Urdu, Hindi, Bengali and Tagalog speakers say the English word, so English works as a shared bridge.
  • Give size in metric units (tonnes, kVA, metres, litres) and write the unit next to every number.

This is for a mixed-nationality site team, or a buyer who must order a machine from a supplier who uses another name for it. The tables give heavy equipment names in six languages, grouped by machine family. Look-alike pairs follow, with what to state so the wrong machine does not arrive.

Why does the same machine have so many names?

Each language has its own word, everyday speech differs from formal speech, and some brand names have become the word for a whole machine.

In Saudi Arabia, people often say JCB for a backhoe loader and Bobcat (بوبكات) for a skid steer, whatever the real make is. A request that says only "Bobcat" may be read as any small loader.

How to read the tables. The Arabic column shows the name Maedah's site uses first, then "everyday" or "formal" words where they differ. The other columns use the names of the Maedah category pages. Tagalog keeps the English term, so that column often repeats the English one. A word in brackets is a second name in common use. Tagalog "at" means "and".

What are lifting machines called in six languages?

Lifting is where names collide most. رافعة, كرين and ونش are used loosely, so see the mix-ups table below.

The site's category is simply Cranes (كرينات); a mobile crane is a crane on wheels or tracks that drives to the site, so write "mobile crane" plus the heaviest load, its radius and the lift height in the request.

For how to choose among them, see types of cranes and forklift types. All of these sit under lifting equipment.

What are excavators, loaders and backhoes called in six languages?

The site lists JCB and Bobcat as machine types, because that is how people ask for them.

What are trucks, tankers and concrete machines called?

Always add the load the truck must carry.

وايت is the everyday word for a tanker. It does not say what the tanker carries, so add water, diesel or sewage. The site uses وايت ماء for a water tanker and وايت صرف صحي for a vacuum truck. For lowbed and flatbed, see the Lowbed and flatbed row of the mix-up table below.

What are generators, compressors, tools and cabins called?

In Urdu, Hindi, Bengali and Tagalog these are mostly English words. Arabic has its own everyday words, such as صاروخ for an angle grinder. What changes between machines is the unit that sizes them.

For power machines, ask for the output in kVA or kW. See power equipment for the machines themselves.

Which machine names get mixed up, and how do you avoid it?

The right-hand column shows what to state so the supplier can tell each pair apart.

Often confusedWhat separates themAsk or state
Forklift and telehandlerA forklift lifts on a vertical mast. A telehandler has a boom that extends forward and up, and its capacity falls as it extends.Lift height and reach, on what ground
Scissor lift and man liftA scissor lift raises a platform straight up. A man lift (boom lift) usually has a boom that reaches out and over obstacles.Height, and sideways reach needed
Mobile crane and boom truckA boom truck is a crane mounted on a truck chassis, usually for lighter lifts, and it can often carry material too. A mobile crane is usually the larger machine. Both must work within the manufacturer's load chart.Weight, radius and height
Backhoe loader (JCB) and excavatorA backhoe loader has a loader bucket at the front and a digging arm at the back. An excavator's cab and boom rotate on top of its tracks or wheels.Dig depth, and loading or digging
Skid steer (Bobcat) and mini excavatorA skid steer pushes and carries with front arms. A mini excavator digs with a boom and a turning cab.Task, and machine weight
Wheel loader (شيول) and excavatorA loader scoops and carries material at ground level. An excavator is built to dig below its own level.Bucket size in cubic metres
Lowbed and flatbedA lowbed has a low deck for tall or heavy machines. A flatbed (سطحة) usually means a tow-type truck for cars and small machines around town. For goods between cities, ask for a flatbed semi-trailer (تريلا سطحة).Weight, length and height of the load
Plate compactor and road rollerدكاك can mean either. A plate compactor is a small hand-guided machine for trenches and paving. A road roller is a ride-on or larger drum machine.Machine weight and the surface to be compacted

Three habits help avoid wrong-machine orders:

  1. Name the capacity in units. Tonnes for forklifts and trucks, the load with its radius for cranes, kVA for generators, air flow and pressure for compressors, metres for height and reach, litres for tankers. Write the unit next to every number, and say metres, not feet, and tonnes, not tons, if someone on site works in the other system. A bare "20" is not a size.
  2. Confirm the word with a photo or specification. If you hear ونش, ask whether it lifts, winches or recovers.
  3. Say what the machine must do, such as the weight, height and distance of the lift; what to write in an equipment rental request shows how.

A request line can read like this example: "Excavator (حفار), 20-tonne class, dig depth 6 metres, with operator, Jeddah, 10 days." The English term, the Arabic word and the size are all there.

How to do this on Maedah

Maedah works in all six languages, and the tables above use the category names it shows. Switch the app to your language, then post a request once: pick the category, state the quantity, add the size in units and describe the job in a line, as in the example above. When quotes arrive side by side, check that each names the machine type and size you asked for.

Common questions

What other names does an excavator go by?

Besides حفار, you may hear بوكلين in Arabic, पोकलेन in Hindi and ভেকু in Bengali. These are everyday words for an excavator, but speakers sometimes stretch them to other digging machines, so confirm what is meant. An excavator's cab and boom rotate on top of its tracks or wheels; a backhoe loader has a loader bucket at the front and a digging arm at the back. State the weight class and the dig depth you need.

Should I write the Arabic or the English name in a request?

Write both when you can, as in حفار (excavator), and add the size with its unit. The Arabic word is what a Saudi supplier says aloud, and the size removes doubt whichever word is read.

What do I write for a mobile crane if I only know the word ونش?

Describe the lift instead: the weight in tonnes, the radius (the distance from the machine to the load) and the height. Then ask the supplier whether they mean a mobile crane, a boom truck or a winch, and which machine they would send. A described lift can be matched to a load chart; one word cannot.

Can I use English words with Urdu, Hindi, Bengali or Tagalog speakers?

Often yes. Many of them say the English word for crane, excavator, generator and forklift, so the English term plus the size in units is a safe shared base. For anything less common, show the written name from the table.
